Every beach is special, but the ones that I visit daily offer extremes. During low tide, and if I am lucky to catch a negative tide, parts of the world are exposed that one normally doesn’t see. Little universes are revealed. While on high tides, and during winter king tides, the whole beach is destroyed and then rearranged. Much like the mutable shoreline, my own internal world sees its own high and low tides. Times when the water pulls back and reveals secret dream worlds. And there are other phases when crashing waves take over and the self is shattered and rebuilt.
Intertidal Spells examines these extremes through paintings and hanging sculptures. The sculptures are physical meditations of healing in action. Like braiding a loved one's hair; weaving these sacred found objects together and building them a new home is my way of honoring and loving them. The paintings feel like the dreams I stepped into while my hands were busy making the sculptures. Through gathering, assembling, drilling and weaving, energy moves and is transformed into dreams and intentions on the canvas.
